Why Wardn needs each permission
Wardn never asks for Administrator. When you add it, Discord shows the 21 permissions below. Here's what each one is for, in plain English, and what stops working if you untick it.
Keep Wardn's role high enough. Discord only lets a bot manage roles below its own, so drag the Wardn role above every role it should give or take away (Server Settings → Roles). See Getting started.
Server permissions
| Permission | What Wardn uses it for | Without it |
|---|---|---|
| View Channels | Seeing the channels it works in: reading commands, posting panels, logs and alerts. | Wardn can't see or reply anywhere. Every feature stops. |
| Send Messages | Replies to commands, log messages, welcome messages, anti-raid alerts and panels. | Wardn can't reply, log or post alerts. |
| Send Messages in Threads | Replying to commands used inside threads. | Commands used in threads get no reply. |
| Embed Links | Almost every reply, log and panel is an embed. | Most replies and panels don't show. |
| Attach Files | Rank and welcome image cards, ticket transcripts and captchas. | Image cards and transcripts can't be posted. |
| Read Message History | Ticket transcripts, and reaction-role, giveaway and verification panels posted earlier. | Transcripts come out empty and older panels stop working. |
| Add Reactions | Giveaways, reaction roles and suggestion votes. | Wardn can't add the reactions members press. |
| Use External Emoji | Custom emoji in embeds and buttons. | Custom emoji show as plain text. |
| Kick Members | /kick, and kicking new accounts that are too young when anti-raid's minimum account age is set to kick. | /kick and account-age kicks fail. |
| Ban Members | /ban, /tempban and /unban. | Bans and unbans fail, including temp bans ending. |
| Moderate Members | /mute (Discord's timeout), auto-mod timeouts, and timing out accounts that are too young when anti-raid is set to time out. | Mutes and timeouts fail. |
| Manage Messages | /clear, auto-mod removing spam, and sticky messages. | Auto-mod can't delete anything, and /clear fails. |
| View Audit Log | Logging who created, changed or deleted channels and roles. | Logs still post, but can't say who made the change. |
| Manage Roles | Giving the Verified role, join roles, level rewards and reaction roles; restored members' roles; /addrole and /removerole; and /verification setup. Wardn can only manage roles below its own. | Verification, reaction roles, level rewards and restore can't give roles. |
| Manage Channels | Creating ticket channels, stats counters and temporary voice channels, /slowmode, /verification setup (the #verify channel and hiding the rest of the server), and loading server backups. | Tickets can't open, verification setup fails, and counters, temporary voice and backups stop. |
| Manage Nicknames | Role nicknames: setting a member's nickname when they get a role you chose. | Role nicknames aren't applied. |
| Manage Server | Anti-raid's lockdown (pausing invites and raising the verification level), invite tracking (Discord only shows invites to bots with this), and server event logs. | Anti-raid can only alert, not lock the server. Invite tracking and server event logs stop. |
| Create Invite | Member restore: adding members back into the new server with /restore pull. | /restore pull refuses to run. |
| Connect | Music, which is temporarily unavailable. Also needed to set up temporary voice channels and to lock stats counter channels so nobody can join them. | Temporary voice channels and stats counters can't be set up. |
| Speak | Music, which is temporarily unavailable. Also lets Wardn give you Speak in your own temporary voice channel. | Temporary voice channels can't be set up. |
| Move Members | Music, which is temporarily unavailable. Also moves you into your new temporary voice channel when you join the "join to create" channel. | Temporary voice can't move you into your channel. |
Data access shown in the App Directory
Discord also lists three kinds of data access for Wardn. These aren't permissions you tick; they decide what information Discord sends Wardn at all.
| Data access | What Wardn uses it for | Without it |
|---|---|---|
| Message content | Text commands with the + prefix, auto-mod, earning XP for levels, ticket transcripts and message logs. Wardn doesn't store message content, except in ticket transcripts and log channels your admins set up. | Auto-mod, prefix commands and transcripts couldn't work. |
| Server members | Welcome and leave messages, verification, anti-raid noticing a wave of joins, join roles, invite tracking, member restore and member logs. | Wardn wouldn't know when people join, so anti-raid and welcomes couldn't work. |
| Presence | Showing a member's online status on their /level rank card. | Rank cards would show everyone as offline. |
What Wardn stores, and how to have it deleted, is in the privacy policy.
Questions
Does Wardn need Administrator?
No. Wardn never asks for Administrator. It asks only for the permissions listed on this page, so you can see exactly what it can do.
Can I untick permissions when I add Wardn?
Yes, but the features that use them stop working, as listed above. The dashboard shows a banner when Wardn is missing a permission it needs, with a link to fix it.
Why does Wardn ask for voice permissions?
Connect, Speak and Move Members are for music, which is temporarily unavailable, and for temporary voice channels and stats counters, which are Premium features.
Does Wardn store message content?
No. Wardn reads messages to run commands, auto-mod and levelling, but doesn't store their content, except in ticket transcripts and in log channels a server's admins set up.
Something not working after you changed a permission? Ask in Wardn's Discord server or email [email protected].
